Dr. İskender Sayek
Born in Iskenderun, Turkey in 1944, Professor İskender Sayek earned his medical degree at Hacettepe University in 1970. He went on to pursue residency training in surgery at the same university but later transferred to the State University of New York at Buffalo, Buffalo General Hospital which he completed in 1976.
Dr. Sayek then returned to Turkey where he taught at his alma mater as an instructor of surgery in 1976, an associate professor in 1981 and a full professor in 1988. He also took on leadership roles at the same university as associate dean between 1991 and 1994 and as dean from 2000 until 2006. He retired from the university in 2011.
Dr. Sayek served as a council member of the Surgical Infection Society between 1990 and 1996 and then as a president in 1997. He was also president of Ankara Medical Chamber, Ankara Surgical Society and the Turkish Surgical Society.
Currently, Dr. Sayek chairs the Turkish Medical Association and the Medical Education Council and is president of the Association of Evaluation and Accreditation of Medical Education Programs.
He has published over 250 articles in national and international journals and received numerous awards, including one from TUBİTAK (1984), the Eczacıbaşı Science Award (2002), the Hacettepe University Service Award (2011), the Bayındır Hospitals Service Award (2011), as well as two honorary doctorates from medical education institutions.
