Machlett Therapy Tube

Ref. E17

This heavy water-cooled-anode tube is 13”(32.5 cm) long with a five-inch (12.5 cm) diameter. Weighing 6 lbs (2.75 Kg), it dates back probably to the early 2nd half of the 20th Century.

It was intended for superficial radiotherapy and has unknown specifications.

Note the metal belt around the middle of the wide part of the tube, masking the space between the line filament and the opening of the hooded anode. A smaller metal belt is visible more to the right in the picture.

A tube of the same shape, of larger size, equally of the water-cooled-anode type was also produced by Machlett, possibly intended for (probably) deep radiotherapy.

The tungsten target is seated in the deep (probably) copper hooded anode, with the focal spot (of the line-focus type) just behind the beryllium window.
