Objectives
Gastroenteritis Management
Etiology and Diagnosis: Differentiate between viral, bacterial, and parasitic causes of gastroenteritis, and apply diagnostic tools to confirm the underlying etiology.
Clinical Assessment: Recognize key clinical features, assess dehydration severity, and identify high-risk patient populations requiring targeted interventions.
Evidence-Based Management: Develop treatment protocols, including rehydration therapy, antimicrobial use, and dietary recommendations, tailored to the specific cause of gastroenteritis.
Prevention and Public Health Strategies: Explore preventive measures, such as vaccination programs, hygiene practices, and outbreak containment strategies, to reduce disease burden.
Clostridium Difficile Colitis
Pathophysiology and Risk Factors: Understand the pathogenesis of C. difficile infection (CDI) and identify risk factors, including antibiotic use and healthcare-associated exposures.
Diagnosis and Classification: Apply diagnostic criteria for CDI, including the use of stool testing and classification of disease severity based on clinical and laboratory findings.
Treatment and Management: Develop evidence-based treatment plans, including first-line therapies (e.g., vancomycin, fidaxomicin), recurrence management, and the role of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT).
Infection Control and Prevention: Implement infection control practices and preventive strategies, such as antimicrobial stewardship and patient education, to minimize CDI recurrence and transmission.
