Clinical Research in the Division of Rheumatology

The evolution within the field of rheumatology over the preceding two decades has involved novel perspectives on the pathophysiology of various rheumatic diseases, reevaluation of the clinical manifestations of these diseases in light of therapeutic advancements, and notable progress in biologic treatments. The Division of Rheumatology at LAU Medical Center – Rizk and Saint John Hospitals is actively engaged in multiple research endeavors. These projects are interdisciplinary, drawing on expertise from other divisions, including Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, and the Departments of Dermatology and Obstetrics/Gynecology.

Furthermore, our division participates in an international multi-center study focusing on the utilization of JAK inhibitors in rheumatic diseases.

Areas of Current Active Research

“The Future of Janus Kinase Inhibitors (JAK i) use in Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases –A Delphi Study”

JAK inhibitors, classified as Targeted DMARDs (Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic Drugs), have received FDA and EMEA approval for treating several rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. In this multi-center study, researchers are further investigating the use of these medications for connective tissue diseases.

“The Association between Fibromyalgia and Abortion in Lebanon”

Fibromyalgia is a prevalent disease observed in rheumatology clinics and is associated with various comorbidities. This cross-sectional study aims to explore and comprehend the potential correlation between Fibromyalgia and Abortion/Miscarriage within the Lebanese context. The target population comprises 300 patients, with 100 already recruited, providing valuable insights into this field.

“Vaccine-induced Polymyalgia Rheumatica – case series and literature review”

Polymyalgia rheumatica is an inflammatory disorder affecting the elderly population, resulting in significant shoulder and pelvic girdle pain. It impairs daily functioning and increases comorbidities. This case series and literature review shed light on the possible association between this disease and different vaccines.

“Conflicts of Interest between Rheumatologists and Pharmaceutical companies before and during the economic crisis in Lebanon”

Medical Ethics is a burgeoning area in Medicine, crucial to practice. Studies have indicated that pharmaceutical companies influence the prescribing behavior of physicians across various medical specialties. This quantitative cross-sectional study explores the extent of the pharmaceutical industry’s influence on the medical practice of rheumatologists in Lebanon before and after the economic crisis.

Projects in Development

“Prevalence of NASH (Non-Alcoholic steato-hepatitis) in Lebanese Psoriatic Population”

Studies have demonstrated an association between NASH and the psoriasis population. NASH has become a global burden, especially with dietary changes over the past decade. Our cross-sectional study aims to assess the prevalence of NASH in the Lebanese psoriatic population, drawing patients from both LAUMC RH and LAUMC St John hospitals, as well as various divisions and departments.

“Association between Psoriasis/Psoriatic arthritis and Testosterone levels”

This cross-sectional study seeks to explore the potential association between psoriatic disease and testosterone levels. This novel hypothesis has not been previously investigated. Patients will be recruited from both LAUMC RH and LAUMC St John hospitals, as well as different divisions and departments.
