Diabetic Ketoacidosis Management

Date July 9, 2025
Presenter Dr. Rita Nemr
Moderator Dr. Jocelyne Fares

Objectives

Pathophysiology and Risk Factors: Understand the biochemical mechanisms of DKA, including insulin deficiency, ketogenesis, and metabolic acidosis, and identify common triggers such as infection, noncompliance, and new-onset diabetes.

Diagnosis and Severity Assessment: Apply diagnostic criteria for DKA, including blood glucose levels, serum ketones, and acid-base parameters, and classify severity to guide treatment.

Acute Management Protocols: Develop evidence-based treatment plans focusing on fluid resuscitation, insulin therapy, electrolyte replacement, and monitoring for complications such as cerebral edema or hypokalemia.

Prevention and Education: Implement strategies to prevent DKA recurrence through patient education, addressing medication adherence, and optimizing outpatient diabetes management.
