Social Medicine and Global Health Program
Social Medicine and Global Health Program:
This eight-week program is designed to increase the learners’ awareness of the Lebanese health system and the health needs of the most vulnerable in society, including refugee populations.
Learners will become attuned to the social determinants of health and how they impact the emergence and prognosis of disease.
During the first month, they will attend a series of online didactic sessions. This will be followed by four weeks of experiential learning in different public and private health facilities across Lebanon.
A certificate is issued upon completion of the two parts of the program, and submission of a satisfactory narrative essay or a quality improvement project.
Throughout the program, learners will:
- Gain knowledge of the healthcare system in Lebanon and its unique challenges
- Recognize how social, political, and economic factors influence the risk of disease, impact the health of populations and individuals, and lead to health inequities.
- Observe how cultural and social factors influence health-seeking behavior and receptivity to and adherence to treatment.
- Get exposed to another culture and other social meanings of illness and health if visiting from abroad.
- Learn to communicate more effectively with different patient populations
- Engage in personal reflexivity to develop an awareness of own values, underlying assumptions about self and others, and biases.
- Propose possible policies or system changes that may impact healthcare and outcomes for the underserved.
