Med IV Electives

Student Electives

Elective clerkships are mandatory requirements in the fourth year (Med IV) of the MD program at the LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine, comprising a total 14 weeks.

Electives provide students with opportunities to explore medical specialties of interest, broaden their clinical experience, and strengthen their knowledge and skills in preparation for residency training.

Electives rotations are classified as Intramural or Extramural, with specific eligibility requirements and application procedures. Detailed guidelines and supporting documents are available on Blackboard.

In case of emergencies such as pandemics, conflicts, or other unforeseen disruptions, a hybrid or online learning mode may be adopted. This includes online lectures and assignments to ensure educational continuity.

Intramural Electives

Intramural electives are clinical rotations offered at LAU School of Medicine teaching hospitals and affiliated clinical training sites, including:

Application Process

Students must submit their applications at least one month before the elective start date. 

  1. Complete and submit the Online Intramural Elective Application Form.
  2. The Office of Medical Education (OME) reviews the application and coordinates the approval process with the relevant clinical department.
  3. Students are notified of the final decision by email.

Extramural Electives

Extramural electives are clinical rotations undertaken at institutions outside the School’s affiliated clinical training network. These may be completed at approved healthcare institutions in Lebanon (national electives) or abroad (international electives).

All extramural elective sites must be approved by the Office of Medical Education (OME) before students proceed with their applications.

Application Process

Students must initiate the application process at least one month before the elective start date, allowing sufficient time for institutional approvals and documentation.

  1. Complete and submit the Online Extramural Elective Application Form.
  2. Obtain preliminary approval from the OME for the proposed elective and hosting institution.
  3. Following preliminary approval, contact the hosting institution and complete its application requirements.
  4. Once approval of the hosting site is received, submit the required documentation to the OME for final approval, including:
    1. Official acceptance letter from the hosting site
    2. Proof of medical health Insurance coverage
    3. Proof of liability Insurance, if required by the hosting site
    4. Complete and updated immunization record

Students must identify a designated supervisor at the hosting institution who will oversee the elective and assess their clinical performance.

Upon completion of the rotation, students are responsible for ensuring that the designated supervisor submits the required evaluation to the OME within the specified timeframe. Failure to submit a satisfactory evaluation may result in the elective being considered incomplete and require a remedial rotation at an LAU-approved clinical training site.
